How do I compare GPS systems to get the best unit for you!
The best way to compare GPS systems is knowing what you want and then find out which offers and at what price. There are essentially three main manufacturers of GPS, Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom. All three make good products, although Garmin is currently the industry leader. In this article we will see how to compare GPS systems, which can help you purchase the right one for you!
When I talk about GPS, I mean, after-market car variety. There are tons of other GPS systems out there - the type of software take fully portable GPS for hiking, you can add to your Palm Pilot. This article focuses on what we normally think like a GPS system, the kind you see mounted on the dashboard of someone, or stuck to their windshield.
All GPS systems are basically the same thing. They tell you where you are on an electronic map. All can also calculate how to get to any destination to which you want to go - and show where to turn. Let's make a list of what virtually all GPS systems are:
* Speech that give you the instructions.
* Some versions of the touchscreen.
* A database (Points Of Interest POI), locations of hospitals, restaurants, etc.
* Usually, a choice of 2D or 3D views.
* Nearly all are pre-loaded maps of 48 states.
* All the best route to get where you want to go.
So this is what you get when you buy any type of GPS.
For the comparison of GPS, look at what additional features are available, then talk, they offer and what are the prices.
Optional features include:
* Saying the names of the streets, you must enable it - rather than simply saying "turn right".
* Getting a larger screen - 4.3 a slight diagonal from 3,5 - (I love the 4.3!).
* Other maps - Canada, Mexico, Europe!
* Bluetooth technology - which allows you to use your GPS with your phone so you can make free calls hands.
* Calculate the multipath - Can you enter destinations A, B and C and say that the best way to learn all three?
* Traffic and weather in real-time reporting capabilities.
* Can be used to listen to music or digital pictures.
* Largest database of POIs (hopefully, by the millions!)
Some manufacturers have other functions. Magellan has teamed up with AAA to offer the AAA Tour Book via their GPS terminal. Tom Tom is looking for a clean function that allows users to input and edit data in their database. Garmin is a new unit, which recognizes voice commands.
Now that you know the "lay of the land", so to speak, it's time to shop and really compare GPS systems.
